Should You Repair or Replace Your HVAC?

Ask the following questions to determine if HVAC service is the best decision, or if a new unit is in your future:

How old is your current air conditioner?

Less than 10 years of use: Your system probably has several more years of service left. Consider opting for HVAC maintenance instead of a replacement.

10 to 15 years old: High-use heating and air conditioning systems can start to wear out after about ten years. However, with proper maintenance, your equipment may still have a lot of life left.

15 to 20 years of use: This is the typical lifespan of well-maintained heating and cooling equipment. A breakdown at this age might justify a replacement.

What is the cost to repair?

Less than 50% of the cost to replace: If your equipment is less than 10 years old and the repair cost is less than half of the replacement cost, opting for a repair is probably the best choice. Additionally, if you have maintained your 10- to 15-year-old system well, a cost-effective repair could be worthwhile.

More than 50% of the cost to replace: A costly repair bill can be difficult to accept, regardless of your equipment’s age. It's likely worth investing in repairs for a system that's under 10 years old. However, if your equipment is over a decade old and the repairs are costly, you should consider an HVAC replacement.

How often has the heating/cooling system broken down?

Never or less than once a year: Has your unit been operating smoothly until now? This breakdown is probably an isolated incident, making a repair likely worthwhile.

Once a year or more: Are you needing emergency repairs every few months? It might be more cost-effective to invest in a new, reliable AC system.

What is your AC's efficiency rating?

14 SEER or above: SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, measures the efficiency of your air conditioner. A 14 SEER rating indicates good efficiency and can help keep your costs low, so a system with this rating is a good candidate for an AC tune-up.

10 SEER or lower: If you upgrade an old 10 SEER air conditioner to a new 16 SEER unit, you can save 30% on your cooling costs every year. Efficiency ratings top out at 25 SEER, so the maximum potential for energy savings is even higher.

How efficient is your heating?

80 AFUE or above: AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, measures furnace performance. If your furnace has an 80 AFUE rating or higher, your heating costs should be relatively low, making your system potentially worth repairing.

78 AFUE or below: Replacing a 20-year-old furnace with a 60 AFUE rating with a new unit rated at 90 AFUE could reduce your heating costs by 33%. The most efficient furnaces operate at approximately 98 AFUE, offering maximum savings.

Are your energy bills increasing?

No: This indicates that your heating and cooling system is still operating near its peak performance, making HVAC service likely worth it.

Yes: Energy costs may increase over time, leading to higher bills, but your usage patterns should remain relatively stable. Unexplained spikes in energy costs might indicate that your air conditioner is declining, signaling that a replacement may be necessary soon.
